Philippe Park

Philippe Park is a beautiful park in Safety Harbor, Florida, in Pinellas County. It covers 122 acres and was once part of a plantation owned by Odet Philippe. He is known for bringing grapefruit to Florida. Odet Philippe was the first person from outside the area to settle in the county, arriving in 1842. Though we do not know exactly where he is buried in the park, visitors can still enjoy the natural beauty of the area he cared for.

The park has an important historical site: a Tocobaga Indian mound called the Safety Harbor Site. It is a National Historic Landmark. This temple mound is one of the last remaining traces of the Tocobaga people on the Pinellas Peninsula. Long ago, in 1566, Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, the founder of St. Augustine, Florida, visited the site. He came to help make peace between the Tocobaga and another local group, the Calusa. A small Spanish outpost was built nearby, but it did not last long. Over time, the Tocobaga people faced difficult challenges.
