Pierre-Olivier Beckers-Vieujant was born on May 3, 1960, in Uccle, Belgium. He is the youngest of six children in his family. His father, Guy Beckers, was the president and CEO of Delhaize, a big supermarket company. The Beckers family owns many shares in Delhaize. In 1996, Guy Beckers received a special title from Belgium called "chevalier," and in 2012, Pierre-Olivier became a baron. He also changed his last name to Beckers-Vieujant in 2012.

Pierre-Olivier studied applied economics at the Universite Catholique de Louvain and got an MBA from Harvard Business School in the United States. He started working at Delhaize in 1983 and became its CEO in 1999. He also led Delhaize America starting in 2002. He won awards like "Belgian Manager of the Year" in 2000 and "CEO BEL 20 of the Year" in 2009. He stepped down as CEO of Delhaize in 2013 but stayed on the board until 2015. Later, Delhaize joined with another company called Ahold. He now serves on the board of the Consumer Goods Forum.
