Political party strength in Virginia

Political parties in the Commonwealth of Virginia show how people pick groups to support for important jobs. This includes leaders like the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and Attorney General. We can also see how these parties are represented in groups that make laws, such as the Senate, the House of Delegates, and people who work in important jobs in the United States government, like the State delegation to the United States Senate and the State delegation to the United States House of Representatives. Knowing which party has more support helps us understand how decisions are made in Virginia.

In the early years of Virginia, from 1776 to 1851, politics were shaped by two main groups. The Democratic-Republican Party was one of the strongest parties. It was formed by Thomas Jefferson and his supporters. They believed in a smaller government and more power for the states.

The Federalist Party was another important group. It was led by Alexander Hamilton. Federalists supported a stronger national government and more industry.

These parties competed for control, but Virginia leaned more toward the Democratic-Republicans during this time. The leaders of these parties worked to shape the laws and future of the state.
