Polycarp
Polycarp was a Christian leader who lived a long time ago, from about the year 69 to 155. He was the bishop of a place called Smyrna. People remember him very well because he was seen as a holy person and a wise teacher in many Christian churches, including the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Catholic Church.
Two important writers from his time, Irenaeus and Tertullian, said that Polycarp had actually learned from John the Apostle. John was one of the special friends of Jesus. Another writer named Jerome also wrote that Polycarp learned from John and was made the bishop of Smyrna by him. Because of this, Polycarp is considered one of the most important early Christian teachers, together with two others named Clement of Rome and Ignatius of Antioch.
Surviving writings and early accounts
Polycarp wrote one letter called the Epistle of Polycarp to the Philippians. This letter talks about the Septuagint and is part of a group called the Apostolic Fathers.
There is also a story called the Martyrdom of Polycarp. It shares facts about his life and is one of the oldest stories about Christian martyrdom.
Some thinkers guess Polycarp may have written more letters and books, but we do not know for sure. They guess he may have written the pastoral epistles, such as 1 Timothy, 2 Timothy, and the Epistle to Titus. But most people think these books were written by Paul.
