The Port of Brisbane is the main shipping port in the city of Brisbane, located on the east coast of Queensland, Australia. It helps move goods in and out of the country by sea.

As a coastal suburb of the City of Brisbane, the Port of Brisbane is important for the local economy. It helps connect Australia to the world through trade. Many ships stop here to load and unload cargo, keeping the area busy.

Geography

The Port of Brisbane is on Fisherman Island, a man-made island in the lower part of the Brisbane River. This island was made from smaller islands near the river’s mouth, close to Brisbane Airport. It is the third busiest port in Australia and is growing quickly for shipping containers. The main shipping route into the port goes across Moreton Bay, stretching 90 kilometres north to Mooloolaba, and is kept deep enough for ships by regular cleaning.

Other big ports in Queensland include the Port of Gladstone and the Port of Townsville. Most of the coal moved through the Port of Brisbane comes from the New Acland Mine.

History

In 1980, a train line called the Fisherman Islands line started running between the port and a place near Lindum on the Cleveland line. Later, in 1997, this line was changed to work with two different track sizes as part of a big plan by the Keating Government.

In 2008, the Port of Brisbane Corporation made a deal with Brisbane Container Terminals to use some of its spots for 42 years. Sometimes, dirt and sand build up in the port, which can make it hard to bring in cargo like oil. This happened in 2011, 2013, and 2014, and a lot of money is spent every year to clear it out.

Demographics

In the 2016 census and 2021 census, Port of Brisbane had almost no people living there. It is mainly a place for ships and boats, not for homes.

Facilities

The Port of Brisbane is managed by the Port of Brisbane Pty Ltd. The Queensland Government gave them a 99-year lease to run it. The port has 29 spots where ships can stop. Nine of these spots are for big container ships, three are for bulk cargo, and 17 are for other types of cargo. Over 2,600 ships use the port each year.

Portside Wharf at Hamilton finished in 2006. It is a nice place for cruise ships, with restaurants, coffee shops, and gift shops. But because of height limits on the Gateway Bridge, very big cruise ships must stop further down the river at the Multi User Terminal. On 2 June 2022, the Brisbane International Cruise Terminal opened in Pinkenba. This terminal can welcome the largest cruise ships in the world. It is run by the port but is not part of the Port of Brisbane area.

The port also has a place for visitors and a special spot for migratory shorebirds. This is the biggest such site on the east coast of Australia.

Transport links

The Port of Brisbane Motorway is a short road. It connects the Gateway Motorway to the Port of Brisbane. Most goods arrive at the port in big trucks. Only a small amount comes by train.

Expansion

The Port of Brisbane has grown a lot over the years. It now handles many ships and boats, helping goods move in and out of the city. This growth has made the port very important for the local economy.
