Prida Formation

The Prida Formation is a special place in northwestern Nevada where scientists find very old fossils. These fossils are from a time long ago called the Triassic period. Studying these fossils helps us learn about the plants and animals that lived millions of years ago. The Prida Formation is important for understanding Earth's history and the changes that have happened over time.

Fossil Hill Member

The Prida Formation and the Favret Formation are important rock layers in northwestern Nevada. They are connected by a part called the Fossil Hill Member. In the Prida Formation, this part can be seen in the western Humboldt Range. In the Favret Formation, it appears in the Augusta Mountains and can be more than 300 metres (980 ft) thick.

Scientists are very interested in the Fossil Hill Member because it contains many fossils from the Middle Triassic period. These fossils show some of the earliest groups of sea animals, including Ichthyosaurs and Pistosaurs. Other fossils found here include creatures like ceratitid ammonoids, bivalves, hybodont sharks, and bony fish such as Saurichthyes and Birgeria.
