The Ptolemy Project is a project that builds and tests systems that can work together at the same time. It aims to create tools that help designers combine different parts of a system so they work well together. The main result of this project is a tool called Ptolemy II, which helps people design and test these systems.
This project is done at the Industrial Cyber-Physical Systems Center in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at the University of California, Berkeley. It is led by Prof. Edward A. Lee. The Ptolemy Project uses special ways to describe how different parts of a system communicate, called models of computation.
The project is named after Claudius Ptolemaeus, a Greek astronomer from the 2nd century who made important contributions to science and geography. Another related project called the Kepler Project, which involves researchers from three University of California campuses, has created a system for managing scientific tasks using the Ptolemy II tool.
