Robert D. Kennedy

Robert D. Kennedy (November 8, 1932 – April 3, 2021) was an American businessman. He served in important leadership roles at a large company called Union Carbide. During his time there, he worked as president, CEO, and chairman. These positions meant he helped make big decisions and guide the company's direction. Kennedy's work had a lasting impact on the business world and the way large companies are managed.

Early life and education

Robert D. Kennedy was born on November 8, 1932, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was the youngest of four sons. His parents were Lois Kennedy and T. Reed Kennedy.

He went to New Hampton School in New Hampton, New Hampshire and finished in 1950. Later, he studied at Cornell University and got a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1955. During his time there, he was chosen to join the Sphinx Head Society.

Career

Robert D. Kennedy began his career at Union Carbide after finishing school. He moved up to bigger jobs in the company over time. In 1985, he became one of the two co-presidents of Union Carbide, sharing duties with another leader. He later became the chief executive officer and then the chairman. During his time as leader, the company focused on its main work in petrochemicals. Kennedy held these top jobs until he retired from Union Carbide at the end of 1995. After his work at Union Carbide, he also served on the boards of several other companies.

Personal life

Robert D. Kennedy married Sally Duff on January 28, 1956. They had four children: Robert B. Kennedy, Thomas Kennedy, Kathleen Kennedy, and Melissa Kennedy Jurick.

Kennedy died on April 3, 2021, at his home in New Canaan, Connecticut.
