Rosaceae
Rosaceae, also called the rose family, is a large group of flowering plants. It has 4,828 known species in 91 different groups, or genera. The name comes from the genus Rosa, which includes roses. These plants can be herbs, shrubs, or trees. Most lose their leaves in winter, but some keep them year-round. They are found all over the world but are most diverse in the Northern Hemisphere.
Many important foods come from plants in the Rosaceae family. These include apples, pears, apricots, plums, cherries, peaches, raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, loquats, rose hips, hawthorns, and almonds. The family also includes beautiful ornamental plants like roses, meadowsweets, rowans, firethorns, and photinias.
Some groups in the Rosaceae family have many species. These include Alchemilla (270 species), Sorbus (260 species), Crataegus (260 species), Cotoneaster (260 species), Rubus (250 species), and Prunus (340 species). Prunus is very important because it includes plums, cherries, peaches, apricots, and almonds. However, these numbers are estimates, and scientists are still working to classify all the species in this family.
Description
The rose family, Rosaceae, has many kinds of plants like trees, shrubs, climbing plants, and herbs. Most of the herb plants live for many years, but a few live only one year.
Plants in this family usually have leaves arranged in a spiral pattern, but some have leaves placed opposite each other. Their leaves can be simple or made of many smaller leaves attached to a central stem. Often, the edges of the leaves have small teeth. Small parts called stipules are usually at the base of the leaves.
Flowers in the rose family are usually bright and eye-catching. They have a round shape and typically have five sepals, five petals, and many stamens. The base of these flower parts often forms a cup-like shape. Flowers can grow alone or in groups, and while they come in many colors, blue is very rare.
The fruits of these plants come in many forms, such as small pods, nuts, or fleshy fruits. Some well-known fruits include apples, roses, and strawberries. Many of these fruits are tasty to eat.
Taxonomy
The Rosaceae family, also called the rose family, has many different plants. It used to be split into six smaller groups, but scientists changed this. Now, it is thought to have three main subfamilies.
One subfamily, Rosoideae, includes plants like roses, blackberries, raspberries, and strawberries. Another, Amygdaloideae, includes apples, hawthorns, and cotoneasters. The third, Dryadoideae, has plants like Dryas and Cercocarpus. Scientists are still learning more about how these groups are related.
Distribution and habitat
The Rosaceae family of plants grows almost everywhere in the world, except Antarctica. They are most common in the Northern Hemisphere, especially in areas that are not deserts or tropical rainforests.
Uses
The rose family is very important for food. It includes fruits and nuts we eat often, such as apples, pears, almonds, peaches, apricots, plums, cherries, strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, and roses.
Many plants in this family are grown for their beauty, like trees, shrubs, and flowers. Some of these plants can become pests in new places where they were not meant to grow. People work to control them.
