Sara Simeoni was born on April 19, 1953, in Italy. She loved to jump high and became very good at it.

Biography

Sara Simeoni was born in Rivoli Veronese, in the province of Verona. She did athletics, focusing on the high jump. Her first big competition was at the 1971 European Championships in Helsinki, where she finished ninth.

She won a silver medal at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal.

In 1978, she set a new world record with a jump in Brescia. Later that month, she won the European title in Prague.

In 1980, she won a gold medal at the Olympics in Moscow. She was the only woman from a non-Communist country to win a gold medal in athletics that year.

After some injuries, she competed in the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, where she won another silver medal.

Sara Simeoni won many titles during her career, including two bronze medals at the European Championships and 25 national titles. She is known as one of the greatest female high jumpers ever. She is married to her coach Erminio Azzaro, and their son Roberto Azzaro is also a high jumper.
