Sichuanese Pinyin

Adapted from Wikipedia · Adventurer experience

A map showing where the Sichuanese language is spoken in China.

Sichuanese Pinyin is a special way to write the sounds of the Chengdu dialect of Sichuanese using letters from the Latin alphabet, like we use for English words. It is mainly used in some Sichuanese dictionaries, like the Sichuan Dialect Dictionary, Sichuan Dialect's Vocabulary Explanation, and the Chengdu Dialect Dictionary.

This system is based on Hanyu Pinyin, the main way to write Standard Chinese with Latin letters in the People's Republic of China.

Even though it uses Hanyu Pinyin, Sichuanese Pinyin was created because Hanyu Pinyin cannot perfectly capture all the sounds of Sichuanese. This is especially true for the Minjiang dialect, where the sounds are different from Standard Chinese. This helps people learning or studying the Chengdu dialect see how words are pronounced using letters they already know.

Scheme

Sichuanese Pinyin is a way to write the Chengdu dialect of Sichuanese using regular letters. It makes the dialect easier to read and understand.

The system uses numbers above the letters to show the different tones. The number "1" stands for the first tone, "2" for the second tone, and so on. Some rules are similar to Hanyu Pinyin, but there are a few special changes just for Sichuanese.
