Simeon of Jerusalem

Simeon of Jerusalem, also known as Simon of Clopas, was an important leader in the early Christian community. He was a Jewish Christian and is believed to have been the second Bishop of Jerusalem, taking over after James, brother of Jesus. His time as leader is thought to have begun around the years 63 or 70 and continued until maybe 107 or 117.

Some people think Simeon might be the same person as Simon, brother of Jesus, and others suggest he could be Simon the Zealot, one of the Apostles. Not to be confused with Simon Peter or Simon the Zealot. Simeon's role helps us understand how Christianity grew and was led in its very early days.

Life

According to the writer Eusebius of Caesarea, the first bishop of Jerusalem was James the Just, who was the "brother of the Lord". James was chosen by the apostles Peter, James, son of Zebedee, and John.

After James passed away and Jerusalem was taken over, Simeon of Jerusalem became the next bishop. He was said to be the son of Clopas and a cousin of Jesus. Before big troubles began in the area, Simeon led many Christians to a place called Pella.

Identifications

Simeon might be the same person as Simon, the brother of Jesus. Some writers think Hegesippus talked about him as the second leader of the church in Jerusalem and as a cousin of Jesus.

Others think that Simeon and Jesus were brothers. Simeon has also been linked to another follower named Simon the Zealot.
