Rings (gymnastics)

The rings, also known as still rings, are an important piece of equipment in artistic gymnastics. They are used in a special event called the rings event, where gymnasts perform impressive swings and holds.

Unlike some other gymnastics apparatus, the rings are used only by male gymnasts because the sport needs a lot of upper body strength.

Performers usually wear special items called ring grips to help them hold onto the rings better during their routines. The rings are not the same as flying rings, which are a different kind of equipment used in aerial arts.

Gymnastics on the rings is a test of strength, control, and skill. It is one of the events in big competitions like the Olympics, where the best gymnasts from around the world show off their amazing abilities.

Apparatus

The rings are a gymnastics tool with two rings hanging from a metal frame. Each ring is attached to a strap that connects to a steel cable. The gymnast holds one ring in each hand and moves their body while controlling the rings during a routine.

The size of the rings is set by the Fédération internationale de gymnastique. The inside of each ring is about 18 centimetres wide, and the rings are 50 centimetres apart from each other.

Routines

An exercise on rings includes swinging, showing strength, and holding positions. Gymnasts do moves like going from a swing to a handstand, holding strong poses, and jumping off the rings at the end. Experienced gymnasts might hold tough poses one after another.

One famous move is called the Iron Cross. In this move, the gymnast holds their arms out straight to the sides while hanging in the air for a few seconds. Other moves include swings from one handstand to another, like on the horizontal bar. There are rules for how these moves should be done. Gymnasts can lose points if they don’t follow the rules.
