On January 12, 2012, it was reported that former American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson would sing the National Anthem at Super Bowl XLVI. She sang with the Indianapolis Children's Choir. Husband-and-wife country musicians Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert sang "America the Beautiful". American Sign Language translation for both songs was done by Rachel Mazique, the reigning Miss Deaf America.

The coin toss ceremony had recent members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Curtis Martin, one of the members, was meant to toss the coin, but the referee flipped it himself while Martin stood beside him. The Patriots won the toss. Because the coin landed on heads, the pizza chain Papa John's gave away free pizza to millions of Americans who entered a contest.

Halftime

Madonna performed at the Super Bowl halftime show, with M.I.A. and Nicki Minaj joining her. The league said Madonna would perform on December 4. The show had many special guests and included Madonna's songs and work with other artists.

The halftime show was the most watched Super Bowl halftime show ever, with 114 million viewers around the world.

The next season, they started wearing full-length black pants all the time. This change began in 2006 for cold-weather games.
