Supreme Council – Reconstituent Seimas

The Supreme Council – Restoration Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania was the main governing body of Lithuania. The people chose it in 1990. It began its work on March 10, 1990, and continued until November 11, 1992.

During this time, it helped Lithuania become independent again. The leaders worked together to make important decisions about the country's laws and government. Their work helped shape modern Lithuania.

Powers

The Supreme Council of Lithuania had many important jobs. It could make and change the country's rules, call elections, and approve plans for the economy and budget. It was in charge of making sure laws were followed.

The Council also chose leaders for the courts and could listen to reports from other groups it had created. It had the power to remove leaders from jobs if they were not doing well and could make decisions about the country's safety. It handled matters about international agreements and could create awards for citizens. It could also call votes for big decisions.

In March 1990, the Supreme Council of Lithuania adopted the Act of the Re-Establishment of the State of Lithuania. This marked the country's independence. After that, they said Soviet laws about military service no longer applied in Lithuania and took control of Soviet assets.

However, the Soviet government did not accept Lithuania's independence at first.

In 1991, after a failed attempt to take control in the Soviet Union, the Soviet government recognized Lithuania's independence in September and ended an economic blockade.

By early 1992, the group with most votes in parliament changed. This caused disagreements and separate meetings, making it hard for the parliament to work. In July 1992, they decided to hold new elections. These elections happened on October 25, 1992.
