Syracuse metropolitan area

The Syracuse Metropolitan Statistical Area is a group of three counties in central New York, with the city of Syracuse at its center. These counties are Onondaga, Madison, and Oswego. It is a place where many people live and work together.

According to the 2020 census, about 662,057 people lived in this area. This number is just a little different from the 2010 census, which counted 662,577 people. The area includes many towns, cities, and villages, all connected by roads and services.

Counties

The Syracuse metropolitan area has three counties in central New York. These counties are Onondaga, Oswego, and Madison.

Communities

The Syracuse metropolitan area has many places where people live. The biggest place is Syracuse, the main city. Other places have between 25,000 and 75,000 people. Examples are Cicero, Clay, DeWitt, Manlius, and Salina.

There are also smaller places with between 5,000 and 25,000 people. Some of these are Baldwinsville, Camillus, Cazenovia, Constantia, Elbridge, and Fairmount. There are even smaller communities with fewer than 1,000 people, like Altmar, Boylston, Cleveland, and DeRuyter.

Demographics

In the year 2000, about 650,154 people lived in the area. Most people, around 88%, were White. About 7% were African American. Smaller groups were Native American, Asian, and Pacific Islander people. Some families were also from other races or from two or more races. About 2% of the people were Hispanic or Latino.

Families in this area earned about $39,210 on average together. Men earned about $35,698, while women earned about $25,373. Each person had about $19,098 worth of goods and services on their own.

Combined Statistical Area

The Syracuse–Auburn Combined Statistical Area includes four counties in central New York. It has one metropolitan area and one micropolitan area.

Sports

Syracuse has many sports teams. The Syracuse Mets play baseball and are connected to the New York Mets. They play at NBT Bank Stadium. The Syracuse Crunch play hockey and are connected to the Tampa Bay Lightning. They play at the War Memorial at Oncenter.

There are also college teams. Syracuse University has the Orange team, which plays in the big JMA Wireless Dome. Other college teams include Le Moyne College, Onondaga Community College, and SUNY Environmental Science and Forestry.

Syracuse University’s sports are very popular. Many fans watch the games, and many famous players started their careers here.

Colleges and universities

The Syracuse metropolitan area has many colleges and universities. In Syracuse, you can find Syracuse University, SUNY Upstate Medical University, SUNY Environmental Science and Forestry, and SUNY Oswego Metro Center, along with Pomeroy College of Nursing at Crouse Hospital and St. Joseph's College of Nursing.

Other places in Onondaga County have Le Moyne College in DeWitt, Onondaga Community College in Onondaga Hill, Bryant & Stratton College in Liverpool and Syracuse, Columbia College at Hancock Field in Salina, and Empire State University in East Syracuse. In Madison County, there is Colgate University in Hamilton and Morrisville State College in Morrisville. In Oswego County, SUNY Oswego has locations in Fulton, Oswego, and Phoenix.
