Further information: Streymoy, Norse, Scandinavians, Tinganes

Tórshavn is the capital and biggest city of the Faroe Islands. It is on the east side of the island Streymoy. About 14,000 people live in the city, and with nearby areas, around 22,000 people call the place home.

Long ago, in the year 850, people from Norse or Scandinavians traditions started their parliament on a place called the Tinganes peninsula. That is why Tórshavn is the capital of the Faroe Islands and has been for a very long time. For many years, Tórshavn was the only place where people could buy and sell things. This changed in 1856 when the rule was dropped, and people could trade freely everywhere.

History

Skansin fort has been rebuilt several times since it was first built in 1580. The current building dates back to 1790

The history of Tórshavn, the capital of the Faroe Islands, goes back many years. In the 9th century, Viking settlers held meetings in different parts of the islands. It is said that the main meeting place was in Tórshavn around 825, on a peninsula called Tinganes that divides the harbour into two parts.

Over time, Tórshavn grew from a simple meeting place into a small town. In 1271, it became an important trading spot under Norwegian rule. Later, it was also the home of government officials. In the 1600s, a small fort was built, and the town slowly expanded. By the 1800s, Tórshavn became the official capital and continued to grow, especially after free trade began in 1856. Today, it is the largest city in the Faroe Islands.
