Temporal lobe

The temporal lobe is one of the four major lobes of the cerebral cortex in the brain of mammals. It sits beneath the lateral fissure on both cerebral hemispheres of the mammalian brain.
This part of the brain helps us understand what we see and hear. It also helps us make memories and understand language. The name "temporal" comes from the temples area of the head, which is near this lobe.
Structure
The temporal lobe has important parts that help us remember things. This includes knowing facts and remembering events. Special areas in the middle of the temporal lobe, like the hippocampus, help form new memories. Other parts of the brain also help with this.
When these areas are damaged, it can make it hard to remember things. Sometimes, people with problems in this part of the brain can have a type of seizure.
Function
The temporal lobe helps us remember things and understand what we see and hear. It works with a part of the brain called the hippocampus to create memories. It also helps us understand sounds, like speech, and recognize objects and faces. The temporal lobe is important for understanding language, whether we hear it, see it signed, or feel it through touch. This helps us learn new words and remember what we have heard or seen.
Clinical significance
If someone has damage in a part of the brain called the temporal lobe, they might have trouble remembering things they see. They can still see objects, but they may not know what they are. For example, they might not recognize a familiar item like a chair or a book.
Problems that can happen with temporal lobe issues include difficulty understanding language, remembering words, or recognizing music. In rare cases, damage to this area can lead to special skills, like being able to calculate numbers very quickly.
There are also conditions that affect the temporal lobe, such as memory problems and seizures. In some serious mental health conditions, changes in this brain area may affect how a person hears sounds.
