Development

The Legacy Museum opened on April 26, 2018. It was created by the Equal Justice Initiative, a group that helps people in trouble with the law. The museum tells the story of unfair treatment of people, especially those who were enslaved. It was built next to the National Memorial to Peace and Justice, which honors people who suffered because of unfair laws.

In October 2021, the museum moved to a new, bigger place. The new museum is larger and has a $5 ticket to visit both the museum and the memorial. In March 2022, a new park called the Freedom Monument Sculpture Park opened nearby, showing art and important items connected to history along the Alabama River.
