Tiki Formation

Map showing the location of India in Asia.

The Tiki Formation is an old rock layer from a time long ago called the Late Triassic. It is found in the state of Madhya Pradesh in northern India.

Scientists have found many fossils in this formation. Some of these fossils are from dinosaurs, but they have not yet named the exact kinds of dinosaurs that lived there.

Other important fossils found in the Tiki Formation include parts of a reptile called Volcanosuchus.

Several special animals have been named after the Tiki Formation itself. These include Tikiodon, Tikitherium, and Tikisuchus, as well as species like Rewaconodon tikiensis, Hyperodapedon tikiensis, and Parvodus tikiensis. These names help scientists remember where these important fossils were found.

Correlations

The Tiki Formation is from around the same time as the Lower Maleri Formation. It mostly matches the Ischigualasto Formation in Argentina. It also relates to the upper part of the Santa Maria Formation and the lower Caturrita Formation in Brazil, the Isalo II Beds in Madagascar, the Lossiemouth Sandstone in Scotland, and the lower Tecovas Formation of the Chinle Group in North America.
