Torsö

Torsö, meaning "Thor's Island," is the largest island in Sweden's Lake Vänern. It covers an area of 62.03 km². The island is located in Mariestad Municipality.

Originally, Torsö was made up of two separate islands, Torsö and Fågelö. Around 1930, the water between them was pumped out. Today, the former lakebed is used for growing crops.

Now, Torsö is home to around 550 families who live there year-round. During the summer, the population grows much larger as vacationers arrive. In 1994, a bridge called "Torsöbron" opened. It connects the island to the mainland. The bridge is about 900 meters long.

Because Torsö is in the large Lake Vänern, it has a more maritime climate. This means the winters are milder and the island gets more sunshine than the areas around it.
