Tourism in Russia helps the country’s economy. In 2024, lots of visitors from other countries came to Russia for fun. Over 4.2 million tourists arrived. Many came from China, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia.

Tourists in Russia enjoy many special things. They visit beautiful cities in the Golden Ring of Russia, go on cruises along the Volga river, and ride the famous Trans-Siberian Railway.

People also love learning about Russian culture through food, meeting friendly Russian people, and celebrating festivals like Maslenitsa. Other fun activities include exploring where the Tatars live and attending Sabantuy celebrations. Some are also interested in learning about shamanist traditions in Siberia.

Not including Crimea, Russia has 23 special places listed by UNESCO.

Popular places to visit are Saint Petersburg and Moscow. You can see museums such as the Hermitage and Tretyakov Gallery, watch shows at theaters like Bolshoi and Mariinsky, and look at churches such as Saint Basil's Cathedral, Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, Saint Isaac's Cathedral, and Church of the Savior on Blood. You can also visit walls like the Kremlin and Peter and Paul Fortress, open spaces like Red Square and Palace Square, and streets such as Tverskaya and Nevsky Prospect. There are also palaces and parks near Moscow (Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno) and Saint Petersburg (Peterhof, Strelna, Oranienbaum, Gatchina, Pavlovsk Palace, Tsarskoye Selo). Moscow has old buildings and modern ones like the Moscow International Business Center. Saint Petersburg is famous for its beautiful buildings, rivers, canals, and many bridges.

Nizhny Novgorod is the main city in the Volga region. The city is split by the Oka River. The Upper City has older buildings. The Lower City has factories and shops.

Kazan, the capital of Tatarstan, shows Russian Christian and Muslim Tatar cultures.

The Sakha Republic sometimes offers tours to special places.

Museums

Russia has many museums. Famous ones include the Tretyakov Gallery, the Kremlin Armoury, and the State Historical Museum in Moscow, and the Hermitage Museum and the Russian Museum in Saint Petersburg, and the Kazan Kremlin in Kazan. You can visit museums about writers and musicians, such as places linked to Leo Tolstoy, Alexander Pushkin, and others.

There are museums about wars and brave soldiers, like the Central Museum of the Great Patriotic War in Moscow and the Central Naval Museum in Saint Petersburg. Science museums include the Polytechnic Museum in Moscow and the Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics.

The GULAG History Museum tells stories from old times in Siberia.

Nature

Russia has over 100 special nature areas called Zapovedniks and more than 50 National Parks. Well-known ones are the Baikal Nature Reserve, Altai Nature Reserve, Lazovsky Nature Reserve, Kedrovaya Pad Nature Reserve, Curonian Spit National Park, Valdaysky National Park, Baikal-Lena Nature Reserve, and Ilmen Nature Reserve.

Wonderful places in Russia include Lake Baikal, the Valley of Geysers on the Kamchatka Peninsula, the Manpupuner rock formations, beautiful Kizhi Island, and Europe’s highest mountain, Mount Elbrus.

Other places are in the Republic of Adygea where you can find Fisht Mountain, and in Chechnya where there is Lake Kezenoyam.

Spas

Russia has many places with natural warm water springs. These are found in areas such as Kamchatka Krai, Altai Krai, Krasnodar Krai, Stavropol Krai, and the North Caucasus. Well-known towns with these springs are Pyatigorsk, Yessentuki, Kislovodsk, Zheleznovodsk, and Mineralnye Vody; these towns are often called the Caucasian Mineral Waters.

Russia also has seaside places, especially along the Black Sea coast, such as Sochi and Tuapse.

Sports

Russia is a great place for winter sports because it is often very cold and has mountains. High up Mount Elbrus is the tallest mountain in Europe and is in Russia. Popular places for skiing include Sochi with its Krasnaya Polyana area, and Dombay in Karachay–Cherkessia.

Medical tourism

Russia is a place where people from other countries often go for medical help. Most visitors come from nearby countries.

Religious tourism

People can visit many important religious places in Russia. Orthodox Christianity has beautiful churches and monasteries, such as the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, and the Church of the Intercession on the Nerl.

There are also Islamic buildings like mosques in Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Kazan, and other cities.

Russia has Buddhist places too, such as temples in Saint Petersburg, Elista, and Buryatia.
