Vantor (company)

Vantor Holdings, Inc., doing business as Vantor, is an American software company based in Westminster, Colorado. It works with spatial intelligence, Earth observation, and related software and services.

Vantor's technology is used in defense, intelligence, and commercial areas. It helps with mapping, watching for dangers, and guiding self-operating systems.

The company started after Maxar Technologies divided into two parts: Maxar Intelligence and Maxar Space Systems. Vantor is what became of Maxar Intelligence.

History

1992–2017: Origins as DigitalGlobe

Vantor began in 1992 when DigitalGlobe was started by Walter Scott in Oakland, California.

2017–2022: Acquisition by MDA and formation of Maxar

In 2017, DigitalGlobe was bought by MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates (MDA), and the company became Maxar. The new office was in Westminster, Colorado. In 2020, Maxar bought Vricon for $140 million. Vricon was a leader in satellite 3D data.

2022–2023: Advent acquisition and restructuring

In December 2022, private equity firm Advent International bought Maxar for $6.4 billion, finishing in May 2023. In September 2023, Maxar split into two parts: Maxar Space Systems in California and Maxar Intelligence in Colorado.

2024: Launch of WorldView Legion

In 2024, Maxar Intelligence launched WorldView Legion. This was a group of six satellites that helped monitor changes on Earth more quickly.

February – June 2025: Launch of Raptor & Sentry

In February 2025, the company launched Raptor. This was software that helps drones navigate without GPS. In June 2025, they launched Sentry. This was a system that watches for changes on Earth’s surface using images from satellites.

October 2025: Rebrand to Vantor & launch of Tensorglobe

In October 2025, Maxar Intelligence changed its name to Vantor and introduced Tensorglobe. This was an AI platform that combines data from satellites, drones, and ground devices to create a 3D view of Earth. In December 2025, Vantor began working with Niantic Spatial on a system for defense operations where GPS is not available.

Products and services

Vantor offers tools that help people understand the world using pictures and data from space. These tools are used by map makers, governments, and companies that put systems together.

One tool, Raptor, uses a drone’s camera and land information to see things without needing GPS. Another tool called Vivid helps make maps that show the earth’s surface clearly. They also have WorldView, which uses satellites to take pictures of the earth from space. All these tools work together in a cloud-based system called Vantor Hub to help people make smart decisions.

Vantor Constellation

Vantor has a group of satellites called the Vantor Constellation. These satellites include GeoEye-1, WorldView-1, WorldView-2, WorldView-3, and WorldView Legion. They help take detailed pictures of Earth from space.

GeoEye-1 can take clear black-and-white and color pictures of Earth. It can cover a large area each day and return to the same spot every few days.

WorldView-1 was built by Ball Aerospace and launched in 2007. It can take very detailed pictures, showing objects as small as 50 centimeters.

WorldView-2, also built by Ball Aerospace, was launched in 2009. It can take even clearer pictures, with details as small as 46 centimeters.

WorldView-3, launched in 2014, can see objects as small as 25 centimeters. It can revisit spots on Earth almost daily and cover large areas.

WorldView Legion is a new set of satellites planned to launch between 2024 and 2026. These will replace older satellites and provide even better pictures from space. They will be launched using SpaceX rockets.

Customers and competitors

Vantor works with many groups, such as city planners, nature protection groups like the Amazon Conservation Team, and important U.S. government agencies like NASA and the United States Department of Defense. Many of the detailed pictures you see on Google Earth and Google Maps come from Vantor.

Vantor also works with other companies. For example, they work with Saab to create technology for drones and with Taiwan’s Aerospace Industrial Development Corporation to improve drone navigation. They also supply software for a new command system being developed by Anduril for the U.S. Army.

Vantor's main competitor for satellite services is Airbus. They also compete with other companies in geospatial software and services, including Intermap Technologies, NV5 Geospatial Solutions, Planet Labs, and Vexcel.

Controversies

BSI partnership and Pahalgam imagery orders (2025)

In May 2025, the company, then called Maxar Intelligence, got attention after reports showed more requests for detailed satellite pictures of Pahalgam, a place in India. This happened after Maxar started working with a company called Business Systems International Pvt Ltd (BSI) from Pakistan.

BSI’s owner had been found guilty in 2021 for sending special computer tools to Pakistan’s nuclear research group. Even after this, BSI appeared as a partner on Maxar’s website until the satellite picture requests became known. Maxar said BSI did not make any requests for pictures of Pahalgam and did not look at any such pictures stored by Maxar. Still, the timing caused worry among experts.

There were also reports that U.S. officials had concerns before about BSI selling satellite pictures to parts of the Pakistani government.

Ukraine access to satellite imagery

In early March 2025, the administration at the time briefly limited Ukraine’s ability to use certain U.S. intelligence resources, which affected a program Maxar managed. Access was restored after a few days.
