Yin and yang
Adapted from Wikipedia · Adventurer experience
Yin and yang is a special idea from ancient Chinese philosophy. It talks about two opposite but matching forces that work together to make the whole world. These two forces are called yin and yang. Yin is quiet, passive, and gentle, like the shady side of a hill. Yang is active, strong, and bright, like the sunny side of a hill. Together, they help everything in nature change and stay balanced.
In Chinese mythology, the whole universe started from a big mix of energy called qi. This energy split into yin and yang, creating all the different things we see. This idea of balance appears in many parts of life, like day and night, hot and cold, or growing and shrinking.
The concept of yin and yang is very important in many Chinese science and technology ideas. It guides practices like traditional Chinese medicine and many Chinese martial arts, such as tai chi and qigong. It also shows up in old books like the I Ching. This way of thinking helps people understand how opposite things can work together to create balance and harmony.
Linguistic aspects
Characters
The Chinese characters for yin and yang have special parts that show what they mean. The yin character has a part that looks like a “hill” and sounds like “jīn.” The yang character has a part that looks like “the Sun” and sounds like “yáng.”
Pronunciations and etymologies
In Chinese, yin is usually said with a flat tone, sounding like “yīn,” and means “shady” or “cloudy.” Sometimes it is said with a different tone, “yìn,” and means “to shelter” or “shade.” Yang is always said with a rising tone, “yáng,” and means “sunny.”
Toponymy
Many place names in China use the word yang, which means “sunny side.” For example, Hengyang is named for being on the south side of Mount Heng. In Japan, these characters are used in names like San'in (north side) and San'yō (south side).
Loanwords
The words yin, yang, and yin-yang are used in English. They describe a Chinese idea of two opposite but balanced forces that work together to create the world.
History
Joseph Needham discussed yin and yang along with the Five Elements as part of the School of Naturalists. He thought starting with yin and yang was good because they are important ideas in nature. But we know more about how the Five-Element theory began than we do about yin and yang.
Needham talked about Zou Yan, who lived from 305 to 240 BC, and is closely connected to these ideas. Even though yin and yang are not in Zou Yan's writings, his school was called the Yin Yang Jia, or Yin and Yang School. Needham believed that people started using these terms in a special way around the beginning of the 4th century BC. He thought older texts might have added parts about this later.
Nature
Yin and yang are ideas from ancient Chinese philosophy that show how opposite forces work together in nature. These forces need each other to create balance in the world.
In Daoist thinking, yin and yang are described in the Tao Te Ching. You can't understand one without the other, just like you can't have a bottom of a foot without a top. For example, men and women together help their group thrive. Yin and yang working together helps bring harmony and create new things.
Modern usage
Yin is the black side, and yang is the white side. Sometimes, yang is shown as red. The taijitu often appears with other shapes, such as bagua.
These ideas are also used in the human body. In traditional Chinese medicine, a person's health depends on the balance between yin and yang inside them. The yin and yang concept helps doctors understand and treat diseases in Taoist-influenced traditional Chinese medicine.
Taijitu
Main article: Taijitu
The idea of yin and yang is shown by the taijitu, meaning "diagram of the Supreme Ultimate". This term usually means the simple "divided circle" shape but can refer to other diagrams that show these principles, like the swastika, found in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. Similar symbols appear in other cultures, such as in Celtic art and Roman shield markings.
In this symbol, two water droplets twist and mix, showing how they change from murky yin to clear yang and back again. The droplets move in opposite directions, showing that as one grows, the other shrinks, but they are always equal in size and amount. A small dot in each droplet shows that yin is always inside yang and yang is always inside yin.
Tai chi
Main article: Tai chi
Tai chi, a type of martial art, is often described as using the principles of yin and yang in the human body and in animals. Wu Jianquan, a famous Chinese martial arts teacher, described tai chi (taijiquan) as follows:
Various people have offered different explanations for the name Taijiquan. Some have said: – 'In terms of self-cultivation, one must train from a state of movement towards a state of stillness. Taiji comes about through the balance of yin and yang. In terms of the art of attack and defense then, in the context of the changes of full and empty, one is constantly internally latent, not revealed outward, as if the yin and yang of Taiji have not yet separated.' Others say: 'Every movement of Taijiquan is based on circles, just like the shape of a Taijitu. Therefore, it is called Taijiquan.
