ZTE Corporation is a big technology company from China. It works with telecommunication equipment. The company started in 1985 and is listed on the Hong Kong and Shenzhen Stock Exchanges.

ZTE makes many products. These include wireless networks, optical transmission systems, data equipment, software, and mobile phones. The company sells these products under its own name. It also makes devices for other brands as an OEM.

ZTE has had some issues in different countries. This is because of its close ties to the Chinese government and the Chinese Communist Party. There were concerns about possible monitoring. In 2017, ZTE was punished for sending U.S. technology to Iran and North Korea. This broke international economic sanctions. As a result, the U.S. Department of Commerce stopped ZTE from getting parts from U.S. companies for seven years. This ban ended in 2018 after ZTE made big changes and paid more fines. In 2020, a U.S. group called the Federal Communications Commission said ZTE might not be safe. By 2023, a European group, the European Commission, stopped ZTE from offering some telecommunication services.

History

ZTE started in 1985 in Shenzhen, Guangdong province, as a small technology company. It grew quickly and became important in telecommunications. ZTE started selling shares to the public first in Shenzhen in 1997 and later in Hong Kong in 2004.

ZTE first sold products in China but later expanded worldwide. By 2006, it led in some communication technologies. By 2009, it was a top maker of mobile network equipment.

In 2017, ZTE had trouble for sending technology to places it wasn’t allowed, like Iran and North Korea. This caused big fines and limits on working with U.S. companies. ZTE worked with U.S. leaders, paid more fines, and changed its management to follow the rules.

ZTE keeps working on new technologies and has built networks in many countries, including a recent project in East Malaysia in 2025.

Ownership

ZTE is partly owned by the government of China. As of June 30, 2019, a company called Zhongxing Xin owned 27.40% of ZTE. The shareholders of Zhongxing Xin included Xi'an Microelectronics, which is owned by a state company, and Aerospace Guangyu, also owned by a state company. Another shareholder, Zhongxing WXT, was owned by the founders of ZTE. This mix of government and private ownership gives ZTE both state and private management styles.

Controversies

ZTE, a big tech company from China, has faced some serious issues in many countries. Some governments worried that using ZTE's equipment might let others spy on them. Because of these concerns, some places like the European Union decided not to use ZTE's technology for important communication systems.

There have also been claims that ZTE did not always play fair when getting big contracts. In some cases, it was said that ZTE gave money to officials to win business. This led to investigations and bans in several countries. Additionally, ZTE sold technology to a country that could use it to watch its own people, which raised more security worries.
