2020 United States presidential election in Florida
Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience
The 2020 United States presidential election in Florida was held on Tuesday, November 3, 2020, as part of the 2020 United States presidential election, where all 50 states and the District of Columbia took part. Florida voters chose representatives called electors to support their choice in the Electoral College. The main candidates were Republican Party nominee and current president Donald Trump with his partner Mike Pence, and Democratic Party nominee Joe Biden with his partner, Kamala Harris from California.
Florida had 29 electoral votes, which are important for deciding the election. Before the voting day, many experts thought Biden might win in Florida by a small amount, but Trump won instead by a little more than in 2016. One big reason for Trump's success was more support from Latino voters, especially in areas like Miami-Dade County. Even though Biden did not win Florida overall, he did win some places that usually supported Republican candidates, like Duval County and Seminole County. Florida is one of only three states that chose Barack Obama twice and Trump three times.
Primary election
The primary elections happened on March 17, 2020.
Republican primary
The Florida Secretary of State said Rocky De La Fuente was a major candidate and should be on the ballot.
Democratic primary
Three Democrats were still running when Florida held its primaries: Vermont senator Bernie Sanders, former vice president Joe Biden, and representative from Hawaii, Tulsi Gabbard.
The first Democratic debate happened in Miami over two nights at the end of June 2019. It was shown on several of the NBC networks.
General election
The 2020 United States presidential election in Florida took place on November 3, 2020. Voters in Florida chose representatives to support either Donald Trump, the Republican candidate, or Joe Biden, the Democratic candidate. Florida had 29 votes in the Electoral College.
Polls and predictions were made leading up to the election to guess the outcome. Some areas of Florida changed their voting patterns, with a few counties that previously voted Republican switching to support Biden. The results showed Trump winning most of the congressional districts in Florida, while Biden won several others.

Analysis
This election in Florida was special because it marked the first time since 1992 that Florida supported the candidate who lost the national election. It was also the first time since 1960 that both Florida and Ohio voted for the losing candidate. In Florida, Donald Trump won more votes than in 2016, and he became the first Republican to win Florida with a majority of votes since George W. Bush in 2004.
Joe Biden made history in some areas of Florida. He was the first Democrat to win Duval County since Jimmy Carter in 1976 and the first to win Seminole County since Harry Truman in 1948. Biden also brought Pinellas County back to the Democratic Party. This election also saw Florida increase its support for an incumbent president who lost nationally for the first time since 1888.
Ex-felons
A court decision affected whether former criminals could vote in Florida. After a vote in 2018 allowed many former criminals to regain voting rights, a law was passed requiring them to pay all court fees first. This created problems for some people trying to vote.
Miami-Dade County
In Miami-Dade County, Trump’s support was strongest in the west, while Biden’s support was strongest in the east. Different groups voted differently: many Mexican, Haitian, and African American areas voted for Biden, while Cuban and Colombian American areas voted for Trump. In Hialeah, a city with many Cuban Americans, Trump won about two-thirds of the votes.
