Evolution of the Hindu–Arabic digit

Long ago, around 300 BC, people in India began using a symbol for the number 9. It looked a bit like a question mark but without the dot at the bottom. Over time, this symbol changed and evolved. Different groups of people added their own touches, making it look more like the number we use today.
Eventually, the symbol was changed by people in Arabia, and later in Europe, until it became the digit 9 we know now. In many fonts today, the number 9 has a tall line at the top. But in some special fonts called text figures, it has a line that goes below the rest of the letters.
The modern digit 9 looks a bit like a flipped version of the number 6. To tell them apart when they might be turned upside down, people sometimes put a line under the 9. When people write 9 by hand, they might add an extra loop at the top to make it look different from a 6. Some electronic displays show the number 9 with a small hook at the end, while others do not.
Mathematics
9 is the fourth composite number, a square, and the number of derangements of 4 items.
There is a quick way to test sums, differences, products, and quotients of numbers called casting out nines, known since the 12th century. A number can be divided by 9 if the sum of its digits can also be divided by 9.
9 is special because it is the only square number that can be made by adding two cubes that come one after the other: 3 squared equals 9, which is also 1 cubed plus 2 cubed.
If a special kind of number called an odd perfect number exists, it will have at least nine different prime factors.
9 is the sum you get when you add the cubes of the first two numbers that are not zero: 1 cubed plus 2 cubed. This makes 9 the first number that is a sum of cubes and bigger than one.
There are nine special numbers called Heegner numbers.
9 is the biggest single-digit number we use when we count normally.
The nine dots puzzle is a fun mathematical puzzle where you need to connect nine points arranged in a square shape using only four straight lines or fewer, without lifting your pen off the paper or going over a line again.
Geometry
A polygon with nine sides is called a nonagon. You can draw a regular nonagon using just a compass, a straightedge, and a tool that can split angles into three equal parts.
The smallest number of squares needed to completely fill a rectangle without any gaps is 9.

In Chinese culture, nine is seen as a lucky number because it sounds like the word for “long-lasting.” It is closely linked to the Chinese dragon, a sign of magic and strength. The dragon has nine shapes, nine traits, and nine children. It also has 117 scales — 81 of one kind and 36 of another, all multiples of nine.
