Actinoceras

Actinoceras is a genus of extinct cephalopod that lived from the middle Ordovician to the Early Silurian. It is the type genus of the Actinoceratidae, a family of nautiloids that thrived in the waters of North America and Eurasia during the Paleozoic era. The first and type species, A. bigsbyi, was named in 1835 in honour of John Jeremaiah Bigsby, based on remains discovered in the limestones of Lake Huron. Since then, more than 45 species, divided into at least six species groups, have been described from North America, parts of Baltic Europe, and Siberia.
By actinoceratid standards, Actinoceras was quite large, with a shell length of up to 1 m (3.3 ft). The shape of its shell varied between species, though generally it was straight. In most species, it was fusiform (wide in the middle and tapered at both ends). In certain species, it tapered off and curved downward towards the tip. The chambers of Actinoceras' shell were fairly short, with closely spaced septa. The shell's exterior would have been smooth in life. Lifestyles varied between species, though all appear to have lived fairly low in the water column (in a benthic environment).
History of study
The first specimens of Actinoceras were found in the limestones of Lake Huron, one of the Great Lakes in North America. A German geologist named Heinrich Georg Bronn studied these remains and first called them Actinoceratites in 1834. Later in 1835, he gave them the official name Actinoceras. The main species, A. bigsbyi, was named after John Jeremaiah Bigsby.
In 1853, a scientist named Louis Saemann created the family Actinoceratidae for Actinoceras and similar creatures. These animals had big shells with rounded ends and special internal structures called siphuncles.
Description
Actinoceras was a large type of ancient sea creature with a straight shell that grew up to about 1 meter (3.3 feet) long. Its shell was usually round or almost round when looked at from the side, but this shape changed between different kinds of Actinoceras.
The shells of Actinoceras were straight and long, sometimes shaped like a spindle. In some types, the shell curved inward toward the tip. The chambers inside the shell were short and had special layers that built up more at the front and bottom. The lines separating these chambers were close together, and the outside of the shell was smooth.
The siphuncle—a tube running through the shell—was large and sat below the center of the shell. It started with segments that changed as the creature grew older. The way the canals inside this tube were arranged was special and was also seen in some of its later relatives.
Taxonomy
Actinoceras were ancient sea creatures that lived from the middle Ordovician to the early Silurian period. Palaeoecology
It can be hard to know how most actinoceroids lived. In 1935, a scientist named Curt Teichert tried to figure this out by looking at the inside of their shells. He thought that some Actinoceras species, with heavy parts and special layers between their shell sections, lived near the bottom of the water. Others, without these features, might have been able to swim a little but mostly stayed close to the bottom too.
