The Corniche (Arabic: الكورنيش, El Kornesh) is a beautiful waterfront promenade corniche in Alexandria, Egypt. It runs along the Eastern Harbour and is one of the main roads for traffic in the city, along with Abu Qir Street, the Ring Road, and the Mahmoudia Axis. Although it is officially called "26 of July Road" to the west of Mansheya and "El Geish Road" to the east, most people simply call it the Corniche.

The Corniche was designed by the talented Italian-Egyptian architect Pietro Avoscani in 1870. Building began during the time of Ismail Sedki Pasha and under the rule of King Fuad I in 1925, and the Corniche was officially opened to the public in 1935.

It stretches for over ten miles, starting from the Bahri area near the Citadel of Qaitbay in the west, which was built where the famous Lighthouse of Alexandria once stood. The Corniche ends in the Mandara area of the Montaza district in the east, offering lovely views and a pleasant walk along the sea.

History

The Alexandria Corniche started being built in 1925 and took about ten years to finish. It was built in six parts, starting near Silsila and Shatby and ending near Montazah Palace. The Corniche was finished in 1934.

In 2001, big changes were made to the road. Some beaches were removed to make the road wider, and a new bridge was built. In the early 2020s, more changes happened to make the road bigger, which made some beaches smaller and required new walking areas.
