The college was created to serve certain areas, as decided by the Texas Legislature. Its main service area includes all the lands inside the Alvin, Danbury, and Pearland school districts. It also includes part of the Angleton Independent School District that was added to Alvin College before September 1, 1995.
The areas that pay taxes to support Alvin College include the towns of Alvin, Hillcrest, Iowa Colony, Manvel, and some parts of Pearland. This helps the college provide resources and education to people living in these communities.

Campuses
Alvin College's main campus is located at 3110 Mustang Road in Alvin. On this campus, there is a museum dedicated to the baseball career of Alvin's most famous resident, Nolan Ryan. Nolan Ryan studied at Alvin College, which was called Alvin Junior College at the time, during some time off from his career.
Alvin College opened a Pearland College Center in 1998 where they taught classes for 15 years. In spring 2013, the college decided to close the Pearland College Center by June and sell the building. This decision was made because fewer students were attending the center and new agreements were made with Turner College and Career High School in the Pearland Independent School District.
