Asam brothers

The Asam brothers (Cosmas Damian Asam and Egid Quirin Asam) were talented artists who worked together as sculptors, painters, and architects. They created beautiful works of art mainly in southern Germany.

They are known as some of the most important artists from the late Baroque period in Germany. Their creations show the rich and detailed style that made the Baroque era special and loved by many people.

Life

Cosmas Damian Asam and his brother Egid Quirin Asam were two of nine children of Hans Georg Asam (1649–1711), a painter in Benediktbeuern Abbey. They learned from their father and later traveled to Rome for more training.

The Asam brothers were strong Catholics and their art showed their deep faith. Their most famous building, the Asamkirche in Munich, was built by them as a special place for prayer. They used clever lighting and design to create special feelings in their buildings. Both brothers worked well together, with Cosmas Damian painting beautiful pictures and Egid Quirin designing buildings and shaping decorations. Their art became famous across many places, including Upper Palatinate, Bamberg, Weingarten Abbey, and Weltenburg Abbey.
