Assaba region

Assaba is a region in southern Mauritania. It covers an area of 36,600 square kilometers and had a population of 325,897 in 2013. The capital of Assaba is Kiffa. Another important town in the region is Guerou.
Assaba is named after the Assaba Massif. The region shares borders with several other Mauritanian regions, including Brakna, Tagant, Hodh El Gharbi, Gorgol, and Guidimaka, as well as the country of Mali to the south.
The Aoukar basin, which used to give its name to a larger area, is found in the north and east parts of Assaba.
Demographics
In 2013, the Assaba region was home to 325,897 people. In 2011, this number was a bit higher at 338,708. Of the population, about 47% were females and 53% were males.
In 2008, many people were involved in different types of work. Some worked for the government, while others were self-employed or worked in private businesses. The region also had a small number of tourist places, with just 3 establishments recorded in 2007. Families in the region often included extended family members, with about 22% living in extended families.
Economy and health
In 2013, most babies in the Assaba region got important vaccines to stay healthy. By 2008, only a few families had things like phones, electricity, health centers, or clean water services nearby. Also, about half of the people could read and write, and very few kids went to secondary school.
