Athinon Avenue

Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience

Athinon Avenue, also called Kavalas Avenue, is a major road in Athens. It stretches about 1.5 kilometers from just west of downtown Athens, starting at Achilleos Street and Konstantinopouleos Avenue, all the way to the Piraeus interchange. This avenue connects to roads that lead to Skaramagkas and Piraeus.

For almost its whole length, Athinon Avenue is part of the roads GR-8, GR-8A, and the E94, except for a small part near Kifissou Avenue where only the eastbound lanes are included. On the west side of the avenue, you’ll find the historic Iera Odos.

The Athens Bus Station is located about 2.5 kilometers along the avenue, near Antigonis Street. However, if you're traveling west, you need to use Kifissou Avenue to get there because Antigonis Street only allows traffic going south. South of the avenue lies the Athens Industrial Area.

History

Athinon Avenue was expanded to eight lanes in the 1950s and 1960s, connecting to the national road. Later, new interchanges were added, including one with Kifissou Avenue and another with Thivon Avenue, to help reduce traffic.

Between 1991 and 1993, work began on new interchanges with Konstantinopouleos Avenue. During this time, parts of Athinon Avenue and Achilleos Street were closed, and traffic was redirected through Palamidou Street. The road now avoids a railway crossing, which used to cause traffic jams. Plans to connect with the Aegaleo Ring of the Attiki Odos in 2012 are still not finished because of disagreements.
