Atlantis, Florida

Atlantis is a small city in Palm Beach County, Florida, in the southern part of the United States. It is located near the big city of Miami and is part of what people call the Miami metropolitan area in South Florida.

In the year 2020, when people counted how many live in Atlantis, there were 2,142 people. Even though it is small, Atlantis is an important place in its area. It is a quiet community where people live and enjoy being close to nature and the warm weather of Florida.

History

The city of Atlantis began as a ranch called Mulberry Farms, owned by Philip D. Lewis, a former Florida state senator. Later, developers Nathan Hunt and Paul Kintz bought the land and started building a golf and country club community. The city was officially created on June 19, 1959, with its first leaders appointed to guide it.

Geography

The City of Atlantis is found in the middle of Palm Beach County on the east side.

The city covers an area of 1.4 square miles (3.6 km²), with most of it being land and a small part being water. It touches the Lake Worth Drainage (L-14) Canal to the north, Lantana Road to the south, Military Trail to the west, and Congress Avenue to the east.

2020 census

As of the 2020 census, Atlantis had a population of 2,142. The median age was 62.0 years. About 13% of residents were under the age of 18, and about 45% were 65 years or older.

Nearly all residents, 100%, lived in urban areas.

There were 1,018 households in Atlantis. About 16% had children under 18 living in them. Over half of the households, about 55%, were married couples. Around 12% had a male householder without a spouse or partner, and about 27% had a female householder without a spouse or partner. About 29% of households were made up of individuals, and about 22% had someone living alone who was 65 or older.

There were 1,226 housing units, with about 17% being vacant. About 2% of homes were vacant because owners were not living there, and about 13% of rental units were empty.

As of the 2020 census, there were 517 families living in the city.

2010 census

As of the 2010 United States census, there were 2,005 people, 898 households, and 576 families living in the city.

2000 census

As of the census in 2000, there were 2,005 people, 1,024 households, and 677 families living in the city. The population density was 565.1 people per square kilometer (1,464 people per square mile). There were 1,140 housing units at an average density of 321.3 units per square kilometer (832 units per square mile).

Most of the city's population was White, with 94.6% being Non-Hispanic. Small percentages were African American, Asian, and from other races or two or more races. About 2.6% of the population was Hispanic or Latino.

In 2000, about 9% of households had children under 18 living with them. Over 60% were married couples living together, about 4% had a female householder with no husband present, and around 34% were non-families. About 30% of households were made up of individuals, and about 23% had someone living alone who was 65 or older. The average household size was about 2, and the average family size was about 2.4.

In 2000, the population was mostly older, with about 8% under 18, 2% from 18 to 24, 11% from 25 to 44, 27% from 45 to 64, and over half, about 51%, were 65 or older. The median age was 66 years. For every 100 females, there were about 87 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were about 86 males.

The median income for a household was $71,019, and for a family, it was $82,807. Males earned about $38,906 on average, while females earned about $47,188. The per capita income was $47,614. About 5% of families and 4% of the population were below the poverty line, including none of those under age 18 and about 4% of those age 65 or older.

In 2000, nearly all residents, about 98%, spoke English as their first language. About 2% spoke Spanish as their mother tongue.

In 2000, Atlantis had small but noticeable communities. About 1.7% of residents were Cuban, about 1.2% were Syrian, and about 1.1% were Australian, sharing this percentage with Mad River, Ohio, Lebanon, Maine, and Gilmer, Illinois.

Economy

Atlantis has a big hospital called JFK Medical Center. This hospital is very important because it was where people first found out about the 2001 anthrax attacks. It is the place that gives the most jobs in Atlantis.
