Portrait of Axel Thue, a Norwegian mathematician known for his contributions to number theory.

Axel Thue (19 February 1863 – 7 March 1922) was a Norwegian mathematician. He is remembered for his creative and important work in areas of math called diophantine approximation and combinatorics. These fields help mathematicians understand how numbers can come close to each other and how to count arrangements of objects in special ways. Thue’s ideas have inspired many other mathematicians and continue to be important in solving new math problems today.

Work

Axel Thue published his first important paper in 1909. In 1914, he introduced a problem called the word problem for semigroups, which is linked to understanding how computers can stop working on tasks. He had one known student named Thoralf Skolem. There is also a special type of programming language named after him called Thue.

Publications

Axel Thue wrote important papers about numbers and patterns. One of his famous works was published in 1909 in a math journal, and another was published later in 1977 but was written earlier in 1912. These papers are still studied by mathematicians today.
