Ayumu (chimpanzee)

Ayumu, born on April 24, 2000, is a chimpanzee who lives at the Primate Research Institute of Kyoto University. He is the son of another famous chimpanzee named Ai. Ayumu has been part of a special research project called the Ai Project since he was very young. This project helps scientists learn more about how chimpanzees think.

In the Ai Project, Ayumu took part in tasks that tested his short-term memory, like remembering the order of numbers shown on a screen. He did these tasks better than university students who were also tested. This made some scientists think that young chimpanzees might have better memory than adult humans, but others disagree with this idea.

Ayumu’s work helps us understand how clever chimpanzees are and how their minds work. His story shows us that animals can solve hard problems in amazing ways.
