Bückeberg Formation

The Bückeberg Formation is a special type of rock layer found in Germany. It holds many fossils that are very old, from a time called the Berriasian during the Cretaceous period. These fossils help scientists learn about the plants and animals that lived millions of years ago.

Because of its rich fossils, the Bückeberg Formation was once called the "German Wealden," similar to a famous rock layer in the United Kingdom known as the Wealden Group. Today, scientists often think of it as a larger group that includes the Isterberg and Deister Formations.

Some of the interesting fossils found here include a type of ancient sea reptile called Brancasaurus, an armored dinosaur piece linked to Hylaeosaurus, and a turtle named Dorsetochelys. These fossils give us clues about life in the distant past.
