Baku State University (BSU) is a public university in Baku, Azerbaijan. It was founded on September 1, 1919, by the Parliament of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic. The university began with faculties of history, philology, physics, mathematics, law, and medicine, and had 1,094 students at the start. V.I. Razumovsky, a former professor of surgery at Kazan University, was the first rector of BSU.

In 1930, the university was closed as part of a reorganization of higher education in the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic, but it reopened in 1934 and continued through World War II despite having few faculty members. By its 40th anniversary in 1959, it had grown to include 13 faculties. Two important universities, the Azerbaijan Medical University and the Azerbaijan State Economic University, began as faculties at BSU.

Famous graduates of BSU include two former presidents of Azerbaijan, Abulfaz Elchibey and Heydar Aliyev, as well as Lev Landau, a Nobel Prize-winning physicist who studied there from 1922 to 1924. Today, BSU is the only university in Azerbaijan to be ranked internationally, currently placed at 1872 in the University Ranking by Academic Performance.
