Baptists are a Protestant tradition of Christianity known for their belief in baptizing only believers through full immersion. They follow key ideas such as soul competency, justification by faith alone, and the Bible as the highest authority. Baptist churches also practice two important ceremonies: Baptism and the Lord's Supper.

Today, Baptists vary widely in their beliefs and practices, but they share a common history. They began as a group of Dissenters from the Church of England in Great Britain. Important figures like John Smyth and Thomas Helwys helped form the early Baptist congregations. These leaders believed in separating church and state to allow freedom of conscience.

Baptists have grown into a global family, with churches on every continent. The Baptist World Alliance is the largest grouping of Baptist churches. Different Baptist groups, such as the General Baptists and the Particular Baptists, have unique beliefs about Christ's atonement, but all Baptists value the importance of individual belief and Bible study.

Origins

John Smyth led the first Baptist church in Amsterdam in 1609.

Baptist churches began in the 17th century in England. They grew from groups of people who wanted to follow the Bible more closely. These groups, called Dissenters, did not agree with the Church of England and wanted to start their own churches.

Baptists believe in two main practices: baptism by full immersion for believers only, and the Lord's Supper. They also believe that each person is responsible for their own relationship with God, and that the Bible is the most important guide for faith. Their churches are usually organized so that members make decisions together.

Baptist church congregations can choose to operate independently or join larger national or international Baptist groups. These larger groups help organize common activities such as missions, humanitarian aid, running schools, and supporting theological institutes.

Most Baptist churches belong to national groups and are also part of the Baptist World Alliance, formed in 1905. This global alliance works to help those in need, spread their religious message worldwide, and protect human rights and religious freedom.

Missionary organizations

Missionary organizations helped Baptists grow around the world. The BMS World Mission began in 1792 in Kettering, England. In the United States, groups like International Ministries started in 1814, and the International Mission Board was created in 1845 to support sharing their beliefs globally.

Membership

Membership in Baptist churches varies because each church is independent, but usually, someone joins through a believer's baptism. This means they publicly show their faith in Jesus by being fully immersed in water. Baptists believe baptism shows a person's repentance and faith but is not needed for salvation. There is no set age to join, but someone must be able to freely and sincerely express their faith.

In 2010, about 100 million Christians identified as Baptist. By 2020, this number grew to around 170 million worldwide. A 2025 census by the Baptist World Alliance reported 178,000 churches and about 53 million baptized members across 138 countries. These numbers might not tell the full story, as some churches in the United States are part of more than one Baptist group, which can lead to double-counting.

Beliefs

Baptists are a group of Christians who share some common beliefs but also have differences. They all believe in one God, the virgin birth of Jesus, and that Jesus died and rose again to save people from their sins. They also believe in the Trinity—the idea that God is three persons in one—and that Jesus will come back to Earth someday.

Baptists have their own special ways of doing things. They believe that baptism should only be for people who choose to follow Jesus, and it should be done by fully immersing them in water. They also believe that each church should make its own decisions and not be controlled by any larger group or government. This idea of each church being independent is a key part of Baptist belief.

Types of Baptists

Baptists are a group of Christians with different beliefs and practices. Some Baptists, called General Baptists, believe that Jesus died for everyone, not just for a chosen few. They started in England and Wales and wanted to change the Church of England.

Other Baptists, called Reformed Baptists or Particular Baptists, believe in ideas from a theologian named Calvin. They think that God has special plans for certain people. Both groups have different ideas about how people should join their churches and what they should believe. There are also groups like Missionary Baptists, Independent Baptists, Seventh Day Baptists, and Landmark Baptists, each with their own special beliefs and traditions.

Worship

In Baptist churches, worship services include praise, prayers to God, a sermon based on the Bible, an offering, and sometimes the Lord's Supper. Some churches use traditional Christian music, while others use contemporary Christian music, or offer both types in different services. Many churches also have special services for children and teenagers, and they hold prayer meetings during the week.

The architecture of Baptist churches is usually simple, and the Latin cross is a common symbol that can often be seen on the building, identifying it as a place of worship.

Education

Baptist churches have a long history of establishing schools, from elementary levels up to universities. Some notable examples include the Myanmar Institute of Theology, affiliated with the Myanmar Baptist Convention, and Crandall University in Moncton, affiliated with the Canadian Baptists of Atlantic Canada.

These institutions continue to grow, with the International Association of Baptist Colleges and Universities founded in the United States in 2006. By 2023, this association included 46 member universities and served around 75,000 students.

Controversies

Baptists have faced many debates and disagreements throughout their history. These controversies have sometimes led to splits and new groups forming, but they have also helped shape the future of Baptist beliefs and practices.

One major controversy happened in the early 1800s over missions. Some Baptists supported sending missionaries to spread their faith around the world, while others did not. This led to a split, with some forming new groups like the one led by Alexander Campbell.

Another big issue was slavery, especially in the United States. Before and during the Civil War, many Baptists in the South owned slaves or supported slavery, while Baptists in the North often opposed it. This disagreement led to the formation of the Southern Baptist Convention in 1845. Later, after the Civil War, African American Baptists formed their own organizations, like the National Baptist Convention, to support their communities and worship freely. In 1995, the Southern Baptist Convention apologized for its past support of slavery and racism.
