Base (geometry)
Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience
In geometry, a base is a special side of a flat shape or a flat face of a solid shape. It is usually the bottom part of the shape, or the side that is straight up and down compared to the height. We often talk about bases when we look at triangles, parallelograms, and trapezoids in flat shapes, and cylinders, cones, pyramids, and other solid shapes in three dimensions.
The base helps us measure the height of a shape. The height is always measured perpendicular, or at a right angle, to the base. This makes it easier to find out how big the area or volume of the shape is.
For many shapes, the point or side across from the base is called the apex or summit. This helps us describe the shape and understand how it is built. Knowing about bases and heights is important for solving many geometry problems and for understanding how shapes fit together.
Of a triangle
In a triangle, any side can be chosen as the base. The two points where the base ends are called base vertices, and the angles at these points are base angles. The point opposite the base is called the apex.
The area of a triangle is found by multiplying the length of the base by the height and then dividing by two. This means if you know the base and height, you can easily find the area of the triangle.
Of a trapezoid or parallelogram
In a parallelogram, any of its sides can be called the base. In a trapezoid, the longer of the two parallel sides is usually the base. The side opposite the base might be called the top, apex, or summit. The other two edges are simply called the sides.
Role in area and volume calculation
Bases help us find out how much space a shape takes up or how much space it holds inside. We often use a shape’s base together with its height to do this.
For some shapes, like parallelograms or prisms, we can find the area or volume by multiplying the size of the base by the height. For triangles, cones, and pyramids, we use a part of that number. Some shapes, like trapezoids, have two bases that are used together to find their size.
