Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) is the main company that provides electricity to people in Belize, a country in Central America. In 2019, BEL supplied about 588.4 gigawatt hours of energy, which is enough to power many homes and businesses. They served over 100,000 customers and reached their highest need for power at about 105.6 megawatts in one day.
BEL runs the national electricity grid that links most big towns in Belize together using about 1,900 miles of power lines. One special place, Caye Caulker, gets its power from an off-grid station instead. The electricity comes from many local sources, including hydroelectricity, biomass, petroleum, and solar energy. BEL also has a gas turbine plant to make sure there is always enough power.
In 2019, more than half of the electricity BEL made came from renewable sources, making Belize the top renewable energy producer in the Caribbean. The Government of Belize owns a big part of BEL, and the Social Security Board also owns a large share. Other owners include the company Fortis Inc. and many small shareholders.
