The Bishnumati River (also known as Bisnumati River) is a special river that flows through the Kathmandu Valley in Nepal. It begins at Tokha on Shivapuri Mountain, north of Kathmandu, and moves through the western part of old Kathmandu city. This river is very important to many people because it is considered holy by both Hindu and Buddhist communities. The name Bishnumati means "the beloved river of Lord Vishnu".
Many important and sacred places are near the river, including Sobha Baghwati, Indrayani, and the Kankeshowri temple. The river also has a cemetery called Karbir Masan on its banks. Several smaller streams, such as Sapanatirtha Khola and Sangle Khola, join the Bishnumati. One beautiful waterfall, called Bisnap[clarification needed] fall, can be found in the Shivapuri National Park.
The Bishnumati River gives water for drinking, farming, and special ceremonies for the people living nearby. However, over the past 35 years, parts of the river have been used for throwing away waste. People have also taken away water and built structures along the river, which has caused problems for the environment. Today, there is a need to improve the area around the river and grow more plants using special natural methods.
