Brétigny-sur-Orge is a small town in the southern part of the suburbs of Paris, in France. It is located about 26.7 kilometers, or roughly 16.6 miles, from the center of the city. The name of the town means "Brétigny on Orge," referring to the nearby Orge river. As a commune, Brétigny-sur-Orge has its own local government and services, and it is a quiet place where people live and work, close to the excitement of the big city.
Origin of the city name
The name of Brétigny-sur-Orge has changed over time. It was first recorded as Britiniacum in 1146, then as Bretigniacum in 1548, and later as Breteigny.
The name comes from old Latin and means "property of the Breton." This shows that long ago, the land belonged to someone from Britain during a time when many people from Britain moved to this area. Later, the town became part of the land owned by kings from a group called the Merovingians. The town's current name with its accent and the river name "on Orge" were added in later years.
History
The Hôtel de Ville was finished in 1864.
