Bread & Butter (tradeshow)

Bread & Butter was an annual event held in Berlin and an online shopping place created by Zalando. It let people see new clothes before anyone else and buy special items, especially streetwear and sneakers. Many well-known brands like Vans, Adidas, Eastpak, and Nike made unique products just for this event.

The last Bread & Butter weekend happened at Arena Berlin from August 31 to September 2, 2018. It was called "The Pop-Up of Style and Culture" and let people see and buy new fashion right away. Over three days, lots of people came to enjoy fashion, culture, and music.

Famous music artists played live every evening, and DJs performed throughout the day on different stages. Influencers and famous people from all over the world visited Berlin for activities and talks about culture. Fashion shows showed new clothes and special products, and food stalls offered tasty street food and drinks.

History

The original "Bread & Butter" tradeshow was started by German entrepreneur Karl-Heinz Müller with Christian Geyr and Wolfgang Ahlers. It first opened in July 2001 in Cologne-Deutz. It was made for the fashion industry, focusing on new and modern clothing styles. The event later moved to Barcelona before returning to Berlin in 2009, where it was held at the old hangars of Tempelhof Airport.

In June 2015, the tradeshow was bought by Berlin-based fashion and tech company Zalando. They changed it in 2016 to be open to everyone, not just industry people. The event featured pop-up stands from brands found on zalando.com, aiming to make fashion accessible to all. Past music lineups have included famous artists such as A$AP Rocky, M.I.A, and FKA twigs, along with local Berlin DJs. Each day ended with a party at the venue.

In 2017, the fashion shows included collections from HUGO, Topshop, and G-Star, plus a special show by designers Viktor & Rolf. Vivienne Westwood also opened an exhibition of her work and gave a talk at the event. That year also had discussions on various topics, including one hosted by Adwoa Aboah and a story told by Wyclef Jean.

The 2018 event focused on fashion accessories, music, and consumer electronics. After the 2018 event, Zalando decided to stop holding the show because it no longer matched their long-term plans.
