British Gymnastics (BG) is the sports governing body for gymnastics in the United Kingdom. It oversees many different types of gymnastics, including Acrobatic Gymnastics, Rhythmic Gymnastics, Trampoline, and both Men’s and Women’s Artistic Gymnastics.
BG works closely with gymnastics groups in each part of the UK, such as English Gymnastics, Gymnastics Northern Ireland, Scottish Gymnastics, and Welsh Gymnastics.
The organization helps train coaches, set rules for competitions, and make sure gymnasts have safe and fun places to practice and compete. Many talented gymnasts from the UK have gone on to represent their country in big international events.
History
British Gymnastics was founded in 1888 as the Amateur Gymnastics and Fencing Association. Over the years, it has grown to become a key part of gymnastics in the United Kingdom.
Many British gymnasts have achieved great success in the Olympics and other competitions. For example, Walter Tysall became the first Briton to win an Olympic medal for gymnastics in 1908. In 1928, British women gymnasts won their first Olympic bronze medal. The 1972 Olympics helped make gymnastics very popular in Britain. British gymnasts have continued to win medals in many Olympics, including in 2012 and 2020.
