Bruit Island

Bruit Island, also known as Pulau Bruit in Malay, is a beautiful island located in the Rejang Delta. It is found in Daro District, which is part of Mukah Division in Sarawak, Malaysia, about 150 km northwest of the city of Kuching. The island covers an area of 417 square kilometres and is home to around 9,342 people, making it the second largest island in Malaysia after Banggi Island.

One of the most special features of Bruit Island is its mudflats at the northern end. These mudflats have been chosen as an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International. This means the area is very important for many different kinds of birds and helps protect their homes. The island is a wonderful place for nature lovers and those who enjoy seeing wildlife.

History

Geography

Bruit Island is found in the Rejang Delta. The South China Sea lies to its north and west, while Sarikei is to the south and Kuala Matu to the east. The island is separated from nearby islands and the mainland by the mouth of the Batang Paloh river on the south and Muara Lassa on the east.

Today, people travel to and from the island using ferries. There are two ferry points: one at the southern end and another on the eastern side. The southern ferry connects to Tanjung Manis, a seaport, and Sibu town. The eastern ferry goes to Daro town and Mukah, the main administrative center. Two bridges are being built to connect the island to the mainland, with plans to finish them by December 2024.

Many fishing villages dot the island's coasts, especially along the west side facing the South China Sea. The two largest villages are Kampung Semop and Kg. Bruit. The villages are linked by roads running along the island.
