Cabo da Roca, also called Cape Roca, is a special place that is the westernmost point of mainland Portugal, continental Europe, and the whole Eurasian landmass. It is found in the municipality of Sintra, close to a place called Azóia, which is west of the big city Lisbon.

This cape is part of the Sintra Mountain Range and marks an important edge of the land where it meets the Atlantic Ocean. One of the most famous features of Cabo da Roca is its lighthouse. This lighthouse began working in the year 1772 and has helped guide ships safely ever since.

History

Cabo da Roca was called Promontorium Magnum by the Romans. During the Age of Sail, it was known as the Rock of Lisbon. The lighthouse there began working in 1772.

Geography

The cape is inside the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, about 42 kilometres west of Lisbon. You can find a special spot marked on a stone plaque at a monument there.

The western coast has sandy beaches and tall rocky cliffs. Near Cabo da Roca, the cliffs rise more than 100 metres high and are made from old, folded rocks. These rocks include granite, syenite, gabbro-diorite, and volcanic breccia.

The plants here are tough and can survive salty air and strong winds. Unfortunately, an invasive plant called Carpobrotus edulis has taken over much of the land. This plant was brought in by local people years ago but now grows everywhere.

Many birds that travel long distances and live near the sea rest along the cliffs and in the safe coves of this area.

The ocean helps keep the weather at Cabo da Roca very mild. In summer, it stays cool with little rain, but there is often fog that makes the air humid. Summer is also the windiest time, with winds around 15 km/h in July and August. Winters are rainy and mild, especially at night, with more rain than nearby areas like the Sintra Mountains. Because of the seasons changing late, September is actually warmer than July.
