California State Route 275
Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience
California State Route 275, often called SR 275, is a special road in California that connects West Sacramento to Downtown Sacramento. This route is very short and only includes the Tower Bridge, which crosses the Sacramento River. Since 1996, the law says that SR 275 is exactly the length of this bridge.
Before 1996, SR 275 was known as the West Sacramento Freeway. Back then, it was a small road that linked Interstate 80 Business and U.S. Route 50 in West Sacramento to the Tower Bridge. It even went a little further into Sacramento along the Capitol Mall, ending near the California State Capitol.
West Sacramento made big changes to this area, turning the old freeway into a nice, walkable street. First, they called it Tower Bridge Gateway, but later they renamed it Cabaldon Parkway to honor a former mayor, Christopher Cabaldon. Even though the old freeway is gone, some maps might still show SR 275 going all the way from West Sacramento to 9th Street in Sacramento.
Route description
Since 1996, SR 275 has been the length of the Tower Bridge, a four-lane lift bridge over the Sacramento River. Before 1996, SR 275 was part of the West Sacramento Freeway. This road starts at Interstate 80 and leads toward downtown Sacramento. After a few interchanges, the road continues as Cabaldon Parkway, crossing streets and railroad lines before reaching the Tower Bridge.
Once SR 275 crosses the Sacramento River on the Tower Bridge, it ends, and the road becomes Capitol Mall in Sacramento, ending near the State Capitol. SR 275 is part of the important roads that help the country’s economy and travel.
History
SR 275 started as part of an older road system called Legislative Route 6. This road connected Sacramento to Davis and then to the San Francisco Bay Area. In the early days, travelers used the I Street Bridge to leave Sacramento. Later, they switched to the M Street Bridge, which was replaced by the Tower Bridge in 1935.
Over time, new highways changed the route. In 1996, SR 275 was officially defined as just the part of the Tower Bridge crossing the Sacramento River. Before that, it was known as the West Sacramento Freeway and included more roads. Today, SR 275 only includes the Tower Bridge itself.
Major intersections
Postmiles were measured based on how the road looked in 1964, following the old path of Route 80. These numbers might not match the road’s current length. Letters next to the numbers show changes: R means the road was moved, M means it was moved a second time, L means parts overlap, and T means the numbers were temporary. Some parts of the road haven’t been built yet or are now managed by local authorities. The numbers start over in each county.
