Cape Town CBD, also called Cape Town Central City or City Centre, is the central business district of Cape Town and the city's economic heart. It is located right under the famous Table Mountain and next to the busy Port of Cape Town.

The N1 freeway links the CBD to areas east and northeast, like the Northern Suburbs, using roads such as the M5 and N7. The N2 and M3 freeways connect it to the south-east, including the Southern Suburbs.

As the economic centre of the city, the CBD holds offices for many big South African and international companies. It is also a popular spot for tourists and has many places to see and things to do. Many people pass through the CBD to reach the V&A Waterfront or to start a visit to Table Mountain.

Unlike some other city centres in South Africa, Cape Town CBD is known for being clean and safe, with good infrastructure. Groups like the Cape Town Partnership and the Cape Town Central City Improvement District work together to keep the area attractive. In recent years, lots of money from overseas has gone into the CBD, and many businesses have moved there from other parts of the country. The CBD had its most visitors ever in 2024, making it a lively and important place for both work and tourism.

Geography

Cape Town CBD is located in the City Bowl area of the city. It lies between the Port of Cape Town and Table Mountain. The area is close to several neighborhoods, including De Waterkant, Bo-Kaap, and District Six.

The CBD stretches from Buitengracht Street in the north to Buitenkant Street in the south. Orange Street marks its western border, next to the Gardens area. Nelson Mandela Boulevard is also nearby. The CBD is about 2 km from the V&A Waterfront, 20 km from Cape Town International Airport, 10 km from Century City, and 8 km from Camps Bay beaches.

Transit

The CBD has a special bus rapid transit system called MyCiTi. There are 21 stops in the CBD, with some of the busiest ones at Civic Center, Adderley, Riebeek, Thibault Square, Darling, Groote Kerk, Castle, and Strand. These buses have their own red lanes to help them move quickly. In 2022, about 2.62 million people used these buses in the CBD.

You can also take Metrorail trains that stop at Cape Town Station, which is the biggest station in the city. There are also taxis you can pay for, and many roads lead into the CBD, including the M3 and M5 freeways.

The CBD has lots of places to park, with about 7,500 spots. Some are in buildings that need a key to enter, and others are free and on the street or in open areas.

There are special green cycle lanes just for bikes in the CBD. Some parts of these bike paths, like Bree Street, have extra safety features to make biking safer and more comfortable. These bike paths connect the CBD to many places, such as Beach Road, Queen's Beach in Sea Point, Blaauwberg Nature Reserve, and Rosebank.

The bike paths are part of a bigger plan to help people get around without cars, linking the CBD to places like Table View and working together with the MyCiTi buses. On Sundays, some streets like Bree, Wale, Strand, and Shortmarket are only for people walking, not cars. This started in October 2024 during Transportation Month to give people more space to enjoy the city on foot.

Commerce

Cape Town CBD is very important for the city's overall economy. It has offices for many big companies from South Africa and other countries. Some of these companies include Standard Bank, Investec, First National Bank, Naspers, and Woolworths.

The area has many hotels, like the Southern Sun Cape Sun and the Taj Cape Town, for visitors. The main types of businesses here are retail, legal services, medical services, finance, food, architecture, coffee shops, technology, communications, and general businesses.

Cape Town CBD is doing very well and keeps growing. In 2023, there were over 3,000 businesses there, with many more opening each year. These businesses include shops, tech companies, law offices, medical practices, and architecture firms.

The CBD has lots of space for offices and shops, and most of it is filled. Adderley Street is one of the main streets in the area. The tallest buildings in Cape Town are here, including Portside Tower, which is the home of a big finance company. The CBD also has the Cape Town International Convention Centre, where big events happen.

Housing

The Cape Town CBD has many condos and apartments of different sizes. It is one of the most crowded parts of Cape Town. Some big apartment buildings include One Thibault, The Rockefeller at Harbor Place, and 16 On Bree.

People can also find homes close to the CBD in areas like Gardens, Tamboerskloof, and Sea Point. The city plans to make the CBD friendlier for walking and biking and to add more places for people to live. By 2040, it hopes to have up to 50,000 new residents in the area.

Leisure

Cape Town CBD has many popular places for fun and sightseeing. You can visit the Iziko South African Museum, the Iziko Planetarium, the South African National Gallery, The Cape Gallery, and the Castle of Good Hope.

There are also big theaters like the Artscape and the smaller District Six Homecoming Centre. Near the Houses of Parliament is The Company's Garden, which is the oldest garden in South Africa and a special national heritage site.

Property development

The Cape Town CBD is where many of the city's new, expensive, and close-together buildings are being built. Even though space in the CBD is limited and costly, it is very valuable for both work and living because it is near many businesses, close to where many people live, popular with visitors, and easy to reach by public transport.

People believe investing in the Cape Town CBD is a good idea. The area's economy grows because of new building projects. A report from 2024 said that in 2023, 30 new building projects started in the CBD. Some were already finished, some were being built, some were being planned, and some were just ideas. About half of these new buildings were for people to live in.

In 2024, the value of new buildings in the CBD reached R9.03 billion, which is more than in 2023 or 2022. This shows the CBD is growing and doing well, and business owners want to invest there because it is the most successful city center in South Africa.

Lately, many buildings in the CBD have been changed to include homes, shops, and work spaces all in one place. This helps protect investments from changes in the economy. With more people working from home, some office buildings are being turned into places where people can live and work.

The idea of a "15-minute city" is becoming popular in the CBD. This means making a place where people can reach work, school, doctors, and shops within a short walk or bike ride from home.

The CBD is also seeing more buildings that help the environment. New buildings and updates often include gardens, ways to use less energy, and ways to save water.

Recognition

Cape Town CBD is seen by experts around the world as a great example of how cities can grow and improve.

In October 2025, Cape Town CBD hosted an important meeting for leaders of cities from around the world. At this meeting, people praised Cape Town CBD for its special way of working together with businesses and the government. This has helped fix problems in the city and brought in new money to help everyone, including those who need extra support.

The city was also praised for being a place where people can live, work, and enjoy technology, while staying safe, clean, and close to nature. Cape Town CBD is seen as a friendly, beautiful place that is easy to walk around.

Governance

Cape Town CBD is an important place for government in South Africa. It is home to the Parliament of South Africa and the Western Cape Provincial Parliament. The Cape Town Civic Centre is also there, and it holds the city’s municipal government and public servants. You can also find the Cape Town City Hall there, which used to be the main office for the city’s government.

Near the CBD, in the area called Gardens, is Leeuwenhof, where the leader of the Western Cape lives. Thousands of people work for the government in the CBD, and many important groups and political parties have offices there too. The area is looked after by councilors Francine Higham and Ian McMahon, who work for the Democratic Alliance.
