Central New York Region

The Central New York Region is a special area in New York State that is used for tourism. It used to be called the Central-Leatherstocking Region or Leatherstocking Country. This name was created by the New York State Department of Economic Development to help people understand and visit this part of the state.

This region is found in the central part of New York and matches roughly the areas of the Mohawk and upper Susquehanna valleys. It is one of two areas that together make up what people call Central New York. The other area is close to the city of Syracuse and its nearby towns, known as the Syracuse metropolitan area. This region is important for visitors who want to explore the beautiful valleys and enjoy what New York has to offer.

Popular culture

Leatherstocking Country gets its name from a character named Natty Bumppo. He was created by author James Fenimore Cooper in his stories called Leatherstocking Tales. These tales are set in the Central New York Region. The term "Leatherstocking" comes from the leather pants that Native Americans wore to keep their legs safe while walking through the woods.
